Hang When installing KB2918614

Post by bobkelsey »

AP 6.1.32
Reaches 97% on installing the above patch and has been sitting like this for at least on hour now.

Win 7 Home Premium, 110gb Disk 50% free, Core 2 duo, 2 gb RAM (another 2 gb on Order).

Any suggestions, and if need be how do I install this manually.
Microsoft Windows Update just sits and seems to run doing nothing for days

If you are finding that updates are taking too long to install, it would be wise trying to install manually. Some updates that are NOT applicable to your system seem to take too long.

To install manually, locate the update, in this case KB2918614, in your autopatcher directory (for example C:\Autopatcher\modules\Windows_Seven_x86\Critical\Critical_files\Windows6.1-KB2918614-x86.msu)

Once located execute the update, this will search first and if applicable will prompt to install. If this occurs then select Yes.

f it takes a while to search it may be that the update is Not applicable to your system.

If that does not help there is a tool by MS that will make your system ready to install updates. (It flushes out the downloaded updates and demolishes the update index Microsoft keeps and then rebuilds it. It also checks for common errors.)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... iness-tool

Damn I really need to make a FAQ.

Problem is this tool is only for Win7 and hasn't been updated since Nov 2014.

true however windows 8 and up have a built in ability to do the same thing...
For Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012
To resolve this problem, use the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. Then, install the Windows update or service pack again.
  1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  2. Type the following command, and then press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.

    Code: Select all

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:

    Code: Select all

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
Note Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, reference Repair a Windows Image.
  3. Type the following command and press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.

    Code: Select all

    sfc /scannow
  4. Close the command prompt, and then run Windows Update again.
