Comments on various places indicate the Spring Refresh is available for those brave enough to not wait for Microsoft to post. ;)

The leaked Spring Refresh was intended for internal Microsoft employees to test the downloads, somehow found itself out in the WILD..

There were articles explaining how to get the update early but this was quickly quashed by MS

Windows XP to Receive the Penultimate Update of Its Life

Post by Whatacrock »

Windows XP to Receive the Penultimate Update of Its Life Tomorrow

Microsoft will roll out five different security bulletins on this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle, with Windows XP to receive the penultimate update of its life before getting discontinued next month.

Windows XP is among the operating systems that will get patched tomorrow, as Microsoft has found critical security flaws in Internet Explorer versions running on this particular OS version.

According to Microsoft’s very own security advisory, Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Service Pack 2 will both get updates supposed to fix Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to access user data.

Windows XP remains one of the top operating systems these days, with a market share of 29 percent despite the retirement scheduled to take place on April 8.

Microsoft, of course, continues its campaign to move users to a newer platform with the help of notifications displayed right on the desktop and recommending everyone still running this OS version to upgrade to newer software as soon as possible.

At the same time, the company is also offering a free data migration solution in case you opt for Windows 8.1, promising to offer assistance in case you get in trouble when trying to set up your new computer running the modern operating system.

AN observation: Of the five security bulletins Windows XP x86 and x64 will receive updates for (all other Operating Systems 3 bulletins), the fifth security bulletin is for Silverlight...

Windows XP: Less than 30 Days Left Till Retirement

Post by Whatacrock »

The ancient operating system Windows XP will be retired in less than 30 days, so all those who are still running this particular platform are strongly recommended to upgrade as soon as possible to make sure that their computers won’t become vulnerable to attacks.

Windows XP is still holding a 29 percent market share, which could be a sign that the transition to another OS version won’t be completed in time and many users would actually stick to their current computer despite all the warnings coming from Microsoft itself and its partners.

Redmond claims that the best alternative for Windows XP users is Windows 8.1, although the company admits that hardware upgrades are also necessary, which would obviously increase the overall cost of the entire process.

“It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 8.1. Customers moving to a modern operating system will benefit from dramatically enhanced security, broad device choice for a mobile workforce, higher user productivity, and a lower total cost of ownership through improved management capabilities,” Microsoft states.

Security experts across the world are also warning that Windows XP is very likely to become vulnerable to attacks after April 8 and recommend users to upgrade to a newer platform as soon as possible.

Windows XP is one of the operating systems that will get updates this week as part of the Patch Tuesday rollout and experts explain that more vulnerabilities are very likely to be discovered in the coming months. However, without patches coming from Microsoft, they will be fully exposed to attacks, they add.

“Windows XP is affected by all five updates, and there is really no reason to expect this picture to change; Windows XP will continue to be impacted by the majority of vulnerabilities found in the Windows ecosystem, but you will not be able to address the issues anymore. Windows XP is getting its penultimate update and is now very close (just over 30 days) to its declared end of life date,” Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, said.

Windows XP continues to be the second top operating system on the desktop, even though nearly 13 years have passed since its official launch in 2001. Of course, this is just another sign that users aren’t yet ready to abandon XP and move to another OS build, so Microsoft really needs a campaign that would show users the benefits for moving to a newer platform in a much more effective way.

I can believe they will "insert" holes in the software or are at the very least are holding back on many flaws that they know about. They will later point out these flaws and say "look how bad this is now that we are not going to fix it for you."

the market share might go up even higher if you include the number of atm machines that run xp.

so-called 'helpful' warning popup is basically spam or nagware.

the information you will most assuredly be given should you make use of the migration help - "your hardware is outdated, to make full use of windows 8 you will need a modern computer".

i've been wondering since wac has been going on and on about this issue if he might actually be working for microsoft on the side for extra cash :)

I don't mind the articles... just goes to show how much effort M$ has to go through to topple their own greatest creation in the search for more cash. In many ways XP is still better then Windows 7. XP offers WAY more under the hood control then win 7 allows. Windows 7 treats ALL users as morons who can't use console or tweak any settings. Windows 8... just... omg. They go through so much effort to make sure you can't do a damn thing except take it to a service desk.
